Greg Murphy, born and raised in Hastings is best known as a four time winner of Bathurst. Greg's involvement with the spinal cord society began in 2014 with a fundraiser held at Hampton Downs. Greg has two sone effected by Type-1 Diabetes and dedicates his spare time in assisting the Spinal Cord Society with raising our profile and fundraising events.
"We were first confronted with Type-1 Diabetes early in 2003, when our 18 month old son, Ronan, was diagnosed with the disease. My wife and I had no idea what T1D was, or what the effects or causes were. We didn’t understand how this was possible and obviously had many questions. Learning that we were going to check our infant son’s blood sugar level up to 6 times a day and inject him with insulin up to four times a day, was a huge shock!
Understanding this was something that he would just not grow out of, was very hard to take. To then be given the news that our second son had also developed the disease, when Cormac was a little over 2 years old, was unbelievable.
For us, finding a cure would mean our sons would not have to constantly think about their blood sugar levels. Ensuring their levels are safe, is a daily grind for our whole family and can be extremely stressful during times of sickness. Over time, fluctuating blood sugar levels could cause major health issues for Ronan and Cormac. Putting more resources into research, that could lead to a cure will ensure a growing number of families like ours, won’t need to experience the stress related to managing this disease."
